The Emporia State football team has found its new wide receivers coach. Bryce Chavis will join head coach Garin Higgins’ staff in 2024 after spending the past four seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at McPherson College. The Bulldogs finished 5-6 last season while going 1-4 in the Dr. Ted Kessinger Division of the KCAC. McPherson quarterback Tristan Szabo led the division in passing yardage in 2023. Chavis spent four years as a student assistant at Washburn University where he played for two seasons catching 95 passes with 14 touchdowns in 2015 and 2016 for the Ichabods. He transferred there after spending two seasons at Butler County Community College. There as a sophomore, he scored four touchdowns on 17 receptions for the Grizzlies. Chavis was a four-year starter at quarterback at Riley County earning All-State honors all four seasons for the Falcons and was selected to play in the Kansas Shrine Bowl. Chavis also received All-State honors at defensive back as a senior and was an All-Mid-East League baseball player. Chavis replaces former ESU wide receiver Tyler Harris who also served as special teams coordinator for the Hornets. He departed earlier this month to become the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Nebraska-Kearney.
