Two Emporia High School seniors were recipients of the first-ever Jones Premier Scholarships to Emporia State University during a special ceremony Thursday morning.
Up to six high school seniors in Lyon, Coffey, and Osage Counties applied for the scholarship, which benefits students attending Emporia State University for nursing or education.
Vianet Umana received the Jones Premier Education Scholarship. Umana says one of her teachers, Sarah Sweet, gave her encouragement to apply for the scholarship.
Umana says she was worried about going to college. Umana’s dad was someone who pushed her to pursue her dreams of becoming an educator.
Addison Gutierrez received the Jones Premier Nursing Scholarship. Gutierrez says she’s very fortunate to receive the scholarship.
Gutierrez says she has a passion for nursing and pediatrics and had her heart set towards it as a career.
Both Umana and Gutierrez’s scholarships to Emporia State University will cover the full cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, room, board, books, etc, after any other scholarships or grants are applied. Both also received automatic acceptance to ESU’s Honors College.
Jones Foundation Executive Director Sharon Tidwell says both recipients are awesome students and well deserving of the scholarship.
Tidwell says the Jones Foundation and the Jones Brothers have made an incredible impact on the three area counties.
Four other students, two from Osage County and two from Coffey County were also recipients of the scholarships. Those names will be released on Friday.
