Wind speeds and temperatures will be lower than they were Tuesday, but the National Weather Service says critical fire danger has returned for Lyon County and much of the KVOE listening area Thursday.
Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in a red flag warning from 10 am to 8 pm — in this case for 20-30 mph winds, dry grasses and relative humidity levels between 15-20 percent by late morning. That combination would lead to rapidly-spreading blazes if fires develop — and, as the Weather Service says, “fires are expected to burn efficiently” due to the conditions.
Outdoor burns are forbidden in all affected counties while the red flag warnings are in effect, and burns are strongly discouraged in Chase and Greenwood counties as well.
4:20 pm Wednesday: Red Flag Warning issued for Lyon and most surrounding counties between late morning and early evening Thursday
Outdoor burning will be banned once again for a large portion of the KVOE listening area Thursday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning encompassing Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 10 am to 8 pm Thursday. The warnings mean automatic burn bans for all affected counties.
The warning was issued due to the possibility of elevated fire danger, caused by several factors including strong winds up to 40 mph, low humidity levels between 13-20 percent and dry conditions. These conditions will mean that any fires that develop will have the possibility to quickly become out of control and can spread rapidly if they do so.
Temperatures will also be warming up beginning Thursday with highs in the mid-50s leading to temperatures ranging from the low 60s to low 80s heading into the weekend.
