One chicken was killed during an overnight fire in southeast Emporia early Friday.
Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says fire was reported at 1223 East Logan just after midnight. Firefighters found a shed and chicken coop on fire.
Steinlage says firefighters moved eight chickens out of the coop to safety but were unable to save the ninth. Firefighters also saved most of the coop, although one wall was destroyed. The unoccupied shed was completely destroyed.
The fire’s cause and origination point are both under investigation.
Separately, Steinlage says Tuesday’s fires at Advantage Metals, 302 Graham, were accidental but other details are pending. Steinlage also says Thursday’s at Kansas Highway 99 and Road 190 was accidental. He says people were trying to start some coffee but set a fire that set a small patch of grass on fire.
