In the boys substate championship, Olpe defeated Madison 44-35.
This was the third matchup between the two schools, and the familiarity showed in tonight’s contest. Olpe had won the previous two games by 16, and 37.
Olpe’s Chris Schmidt stated how difficult it is tough to beat a team three times in a season.
Olpe led by 9 at the half and would build their lead to us much as 14 before Madison’s Colton Isch caught fire.
Isch was held scoreless in the first half but ignited for 11 points in the third quarter and early stages of the fourth.
The run by Madison would trim Olpe’s lead to 4 but free throws down the stretch by Olpe would seal the deal.
Olpe’s top scorer was Brecken McGuire with 17, while Isch added a 3 at the buzzer to finish with 14.
Olpe will play in their fourth consecutive state tournament, 16th overall on Wednesday, as the No. 5 seed and will take on Clifton-Clyde at 4 p.m. The game will air on Country 101.7 FM.
In the girls championship, Olpe won 48-36 versus Marmaton Valley.
The first quarter saw a back and forth contest with Olpe trailing 10-9 before a 3-pointer by Kinzie Kurzen to close out the quarter.
The three by Kurzen sparked a 19-1 run by the Eagles to close out the first half.
Ron Slaymaker, third year coaching Olpe, had high praise for his team’s second quarter performance.
Both teams would continue to trade blows in the second half, with Marmaton Valley sparking a run but they were unable to cut the deficit to single digits.
Kadey Robert led all scorers with 19 points.
Olpe will play Thursday in their 32nd state tournament, which is third all-time, as the No. 8 seed and will take on Little River at 2 p.m with the game being on Country 101.7 FM.
