Weather caused Emporia firefighters to pause their controlled burn at Jones Park on Tuesday. Weather issues have now caused firefighters to put the remainder of the project on indefinite hold.
Wind speeds as high as 25 mph prompted firefighters to halt the burn about halfway through the effort Tuesday. Fog and mist then forced firefighters to look for another day.
Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says it’s good training, especially for new firefighters.
Firefighters got some help from a Lyon County Sheriff’s Office drone as a way to learn more about thermal signatures from above-ground levels.
Steinlage says firefighters will critique the controlled burn at a later date. He says there are plans to have at least one prescribed burn per year going forward.
