Adam Moore’s contract remains terminated after a better than two-hour special meeting for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education.
After a Negotiated Agreement Article 10 hearing and several executive sessions, board members unanimously found “substantial and competent evidence to support the findings and conclusions” leading to both the board’s initial decision Jan 10 to terminate Moore’s contract and an appeal determination to the same effect Feb. 29.
The board also says there was good cause to terminate Moore’s contract, so it has done so effective March 12. As with the original decision, Moore has a no-contact directive and is prohibited from being on district property without permission and supervision.
Board members declined comment on any level related to the Moore case, meaning there is no official word on why Moore was initially terminated in January, on what grounds Moore appealed or why the board affirmed its January decision Tuesday. Moore, Emporia High’s debate and forensics coach since 2021 and a National Speech and Debate Association Diamond Award winner for teaching excellence and longevity in 2022, also declined comment.
In its initial posting of the special meeting Monday, the board posted a document indicating it was considering the suspension of its prior decision to end Moore’s contract, thus reinstating Moore “in full force and effect” if there is no other action from the board. That was a due diligence step.
