The Emporia High track and field team opens its season on Thursday at Topeka West.
On the boys side, senior Blake Spellman returns. He was a part of the Spartans’ 4x400m relay that finished fourth at state last season. Spellman said he’s excited to be a leader on the Spartans’ relay teams.
Other Spartans that made it to state in 2023 include senior Jeremiah Huber in the pole vault. Brody Duncan and junior RJ Tabares also qualified for state last year as part of the 4x100m relay.
Senior Mia Trujillo qualified for state last year in both the discus and shot put returning. Trujillo said she hopes she can remain consistent in throwing the discus and shot put and get back to the state meet in May.
Emporia High is scheduled to compete in Emporia once, which will be the ESU High School Relays next Friday at Welch Stadium. Emporia High coach Randy Wells will join Sports Talk on Saturday at 8:25 a.m. for more on this year’s team.
