The Emporia High baseball team was swept in its season opener at Ottawa on Thursday.
Ottawa won the opener, 10-4, and took the finale, 8-1.
In game one, Ottawa jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Emporia High got on the board in the third with an RBI single from freshman Micah Gray. Andrew Ruxton made it 5-2 in the fourth before Ottawa scored three in the fourth and two in the sixth. Sophomore Maddox Shivley drove in two in the sixth on a 2-run single. Chase Harrington took the loss on the mound, going two innings allowing three runs on four hits and three strikeouts, while going 2-for-2 at the plate.
In game two, Ottawa scored three in the first and one in the third before the Spartans got on the board. In the fourth, Madden Seidl scored as Luke Pitman drew a walk with the bases loaded. Ottawa tacked on four more in the sixth for the sweep. Owen Ruge took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on two hits and three strikeouts while going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Emporia High (0-2) will host Wichita South in its home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday at Soden’s Grove.
