The Emporia High track and field teams opened up with a pair of top three finishes in the team standings at Topeka West on Thursday.
The Lady Spartans finished second as a team had two first place finishes. Freshman Madison Evans won the 3,200-meter run (12:43.81). Harley Smith won the 400-meter dash (1:03.88). Sophomore Paige Newland finished second in both the long jump (16-3) and triple jump (32-11). Senior Mia Trujillo finished second in the discus (107-2). Senior Sofia Ruvalcaba was second in the 1,500m steeplechase (8:36.46), while freshman Emma Beatty was third (8:42.68). Senior Taliah Tabares finished second in the 100m hurdles (19.45), while sophomore Elise Eckert finished third (19.55). The 4x400m relay team of Smith, Lauren Williams, Lexsey DeWitt and Reagan Thompson finished second (4:29.75). The 4x100m relay team of Newland, Marley Mullen, Kaylee DeWitt and Thompson finished third (53.97). The 4x800m relay team of Bailee VanSickle, Leanna Lewis, Ruvalcaba and Lily Heinen finished third (11:39.53).
The Spartans finished third as a team and had one first place finish. Senior Blake Spellman won the 400m dash with a time of 51.76. Junior Daghyn True finished second in both the 1,600m (4:37.06) and 3,200m (10:13.11). Senior Enrique Rios was second in the discus (126-10). Senior Jeremiah Huber finished third in the pole vault (11-6). The 4x400m relay of Spellman, Carter Granado, Harry Trelc and Tyler Luthi finished third (3:45.57).
Emporia High will compete in the ESU High School Relays next Friday at Welch Stadium.
