Emporia Spartan Boxing had a tremendous showing at the 2024 Golden Gloves regional tournament in Hutchinson Saturday.
20-year-old Junior Robles earned a hard-fought unanimous decision win at 147 lbs over Dominique Primer to claim his third consecutive Golden Gloves regional championship. Robles now advances to the Golden Gloves national tournament being held in Detroit, Michigan May 12-18.
This was Robles’ 21st bout of his amateur career.
Also in competition Saturday was two-time Golden Gloves state and regional champion Mercedes Silvey. Silvey was returning to the ring after a year-long hiatus and went the distance but would ultimately lose a decision to Coco Drane.
13-year-old Christian “Gio” Cervantes stepped into the ring for the second time in his career in a 145 lbs match bout against Kar’Vontis Hall of C.H.D. Boxing Club. Cervantes would defeat Hall by referee stoppage in the third round to pick up his first career win. Cervantes is now 1-1 as an amateur.
