In a way, the first year of operations for a new organization at Emporia State University will close with a flourish early next month.
Women for ESU will have its first symposium on April 6 at the Memorial Union Ballroom. The event, held in conjunction with the student-led Breaking Barriers: Women in Leadership Conference, will feature networking and relationship-building opportunities for students and women in the community. It will also feature a keynote talk from Emporia State alumna Teri Karjala, who is now a life transformation specialist, and it will include an announcement of this year’s Women for ESU grant winners. Women for ESU founding member and event coordinator Ali Geitz says the grants are notable because there is a $45,000 pool for projects.
Members vote on the projects to fund. Founding member Kelly Heine is pleased by the initial interest but not surprised.
Women for ESU was created last year to give women a chance to build their philanthropic investment options. Members give an annual gift of $1,000 if they are above age 35 and a $500 annual gift if they are 35 or younger. Members who donate $25,000 or more join the Women for ESU lifetime list.
