The Lyon County Commission has its third candidate filing of the current election cycle.
Tuesday, Madison resident Chris Bartel filed for the Lyon County Commission District Three seat currently held by longtime commissioner Rollie Martin. Martin has yet to formally announce whether he plans to seek re-election this cycle.
Bartel ran against Martin and another challenger, Jarom Smith, in the 2020 Republican primary, finishing second to Martin.
Bartel is now the third individual to file for election to the Lyon County Commission after incumbent Doug Peck and challenger Sid Morgan filed for the commission’s District Two seat back in February. Bartel’s filing also comes after longtime Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat announced she plans to retire at the end of her current term on Thursday and endorsed candidate Aime Jackson who filed for the position that same day.
Vopat became the second county department head to announce retirement plans following longtime County Attorney Marc Goodman in early February. Aside from Peck, three other incumbents on this year’s ballot have also announced their plans for re-election.
They include Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope, Lyon County Treasurer Sharon Gaede and Register of Deeds Wendy Weiss. The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon June 1.
The primary election is scheduled for August 6 followed by the general election on November 5.
