Hold on to your hats this weekend.
Windy conditions are ahead for both Saturday and Sunday, and the most blustery of the two weekend days may well be Saturday. Southeasterly winds may touch 50 mph for most of the KVOE listening area, including Emporia, but they may be slightly higher further west. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Chase and Morris counties from 12-8 pm Saturday and a wind advisory for Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood, Osage and Wabaunsee counties for the same time period.
Despite increasing humidity levels, outdoor burning will be strongly discouraged simply due to the wind speeds and dry grasses.
Saturday also has a marginal-to-slight severe weather risk between late afternoon and mid-evening. Hail to the size of quarters and wind gusts up to 65 mph are the main concerns.
Sunday has no weather alerts currently, but southwesterly winds could reach 45 mph by afternoon. Again, outdoor burns will be highly discouraged.

8:30 am Friday: Windy, possibly stormy Saturday ahead
Frosty conditions Friday morning will lead to a pleasant spring-like feel for the rest of the day before more unsettled weather begins the upcoming weekend.
Frost advisories covered all area counties with temperatures falling to 32 before warming to the upper 60s by mid-afternoon. Winds will be generally light with gusts up to 20 mph, so there could well be a fair amount of controlled grass fires through Friday.
Much of Saturday should be sunny, but it will be windy all day. Southerly winds could be steady at or above 30 mph with wind gusts at 40-60 mph, so the National Weather Service has a high wind watch up for Chase and Morris counties between 12-8 pm. Outdoor burns will be strongly discouraged, if not banned, for Saturday.
Storms are possible by late Saturday afternoon, including severe weather. Currently, there is a marginal to slight risk for area counties, with areas along and northwest of a line from Osage City to Lebo to Hamilton, including Emporia, in a slight risk and the rest of the area in a marginal risk. Borderline severe hail up to quarter size and gusts up to 65 mph are the main concerns.
