The Emporia State tennis teams fell to Northwest Missouri in a doubleheader duel at the Kossover Family Tennis Center on Friday.
In the women’s duel, ESU lost to #17 Northwest 5-2. ESU led early 2-0 after winning the doubles point. Lilie Bizouerne and Paige Stranghoner won the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at #1 doubles after the Bearcats forfeited at #3 doubles. ESU got a forfeit at #6 singles but couldn’t win another singles match though several went to three sets. Stranghoner talked afterwards about setting the tone early.

On the men’s side, the Hornets fell 4-3 to the Bearcats. Northwest took the match early with the first four points winning doubles and #1 through #3 singles. ESU picked up wins from Diego Calvo, Harrison Brown, and Hachem Fahem at #4 through #6 singles to end on a bright spot. Fahem said he was happy with his match, but the team fell short of its goal.
Head coach John Blackburn said his program is making progress in his first year as head coach.
The women drop to 4-8 and 1-3 in MIAA play and return to the court Tuesday against McPherson. First serve is at 1:00 p.m. The Hornet men are now 8-6 and 1-2 in MIAA/GAC action and will also face the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
