Officially, Mic McGuire has been running for election to the Kansas House 60th District for several weeks. He is formally announcing his campaign this week, saying several general items from his first run for office haven’t been fully addressed.
McGuire, a Democrat, ran against Republican incumbent Mark Schreiber two years ago and got about 45 percent of the vote.
When it comes to other state positions, 13th District House Republican Duane Droge of Eureka has filed for re-election. He is currently unopposed. The Senate 17th District, currently held by Jeff Longbine of Emporia, does not have any official filings, while House 76th District Republican Eric Smith has a primary challenge from fellow Republican Brad Barrett. Smith tells KVOE News part of his decision-making process has involved determining his purpose in the Legislature.
Smith serves on the Judiciary Committee and Water Committee. He is also on the Joint Committee on Corrections and Juvenile and Justice Oversight. He serves on two special committees, Kansas Emergency Management Act and Medical Marijuana. This would be Smith’s fifth term in office if re-elected.
Barrett is currently unavailable for interviews.
The primary election is Aug. 6. The general election is Nov. 5.
