The Kansas House 76th District race currently does not have a general election slate, but it does for the primary.
Incumbent Eric Smith of Burlington and challenger Brad Barrett of Osage City filed their election paperwork on the same day, according to Barrett. Both also share a career in law enforcement — Smith as Coffey County’s undersheriff, Barrett now as a Shawnee County District Attorney special investigator after time as a Coffey County deputy. Besides law enforcement matters, Barrett says agriculture matters and conservative policies are a focal point for him.
Smith, meanwhile, serves on several House committees related to law enforcement, including Judiciary, the special Kansas Emergency Management Act and Joint House-Senate Committee on Corrections and Juvenile and Justice Oversight. Besides typical business like the budget and education funding, Smith has targeted cybersecurity and fentanyl as major policy issues in the 2025 session.
The primary election is Aug. 6. The general election is Nov. 5. The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon June 3.
