So far, so good as work picks up speed on a highway resurfacing project in Emporia.
Work began last week on resurfacing US Highway 50 between Prairie and Graphic Arts. the milling, or pavement grinding, process is done. On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Wednesday, City Engineer Jim Ubert said street paving could be coming soon.
Ubert reminds drivers US-50 intersections at Industrial and Prairie will be closed at times, especially near the end of April, although not simultaneously. Some drives may be blocked for up to 60 minutes for paving, or at least until the asphalt cools sufficiently for travel. Also, the center turning lane will be closed periodically, so residents wanting to turn left across traffic may have to drive past their planned street or business, then turn around and get to their destination. Residents approaching the work zone from side streets may have right turns only if the center turn lane is closed.
Ubert also had an update on the Interstate 35 bridge replacement project over Lincoln Street. The project is eventually closing Lincoln Street at the bridge for the duration of the project, possibly into September 2025, but that hasn’t happened yet — in part because of delays for relocating utilities.
