Work Zone Awareness Week is officially ending Friday, but work zone safety should be standard operating procedure at all times of year — especially the spring and summer months.
That’s the perspective from Kansas Department of Transportation engineer Dustin Hardin. Work zone crashes happen a lot more frequently than one might think, so Hardin asks drivers to “put away the distractions.”
AAA Kansas Public and Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward agrees.
Hardin says KDOT crews are readily visible with their safety vests. They also “keep their heads on a swivel” so they can react at a moment’s notice. Hardin’s advice, besides getting off the cell phone: follow traffic control measures, expect delays, pay attention, watch for road workers, give ample space between your vehicle and others near by and don’t change lanes until directed.
