The Emporia State baseball team split with Fort Hays State over the weekend to fall in their final road series of the season at Larks Park.
The Hornets won a thrilling game two 7-5 in 10 innings with seven of the game’s 12 runs coming in the eighth inning or later. ESU jumped out to a 3-0 lead scoring two runs in the first before Logan Myers homered in the second. FHSU got two back before ESU executed a double steal in the eighth to plate another run. A FHSU homer tied the game and the teams traded runs in the ninth to send it to extras. An Andrew Rantz double and Tiger wild pitch helped the Hornets plate two to win. Trent Warstler (2-2) went the last 4.0 innings for E-State to earn the win.
On Sunday, the Hornets couldn’t hold onto a 7-0 lead as Fort Hays State scored the last 10 of the game to win the series with a 10-7 victory. ESU’s runs in the second came on a walk, a sacrifice fly, and a hit by pitch. A Patryk Hernandez double scored one in the third before a Joe Daneff homer plated three more, but the Hornets didn’t score again. FHSU scored four in the third, one in the fifth and got four more in the sixth to take the lead before adding an insurance run in the eighth. ESU drops to 19-27 overall and 9-21 in the MIAA and will head to Washburn Tuesday for a non conference matchup. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
