The US Drug Enforcement Agency has its annual National Drug Take Back Day this upcoming Saturday.
If you want to go to an official site for a dropoff and live in Emporia, you’ll have to drive a bit. The DEA only has two official dropoff points listed within a 50-mile radius of Emporia:
*Burlington Police Department, 616 S Third in Burlington
*Osage County Sheriff’s Office, 131 14th in Lyndon
Lyon County is not officially taking part, but local authorities say residents can bring their medications to CVS or Walmart — or any pharmacy willing to take the drugs — for safe disposal at any time.
All medications brought in through this program are incinerated by the Drug Enforcement Agency. The goal is to reduce the availability of these drugs for illegal purposes and also to reduce any negative impact the medications can have on water supplies.
The program was established in 2010. More information is available online at the DEA’s special information page at dea.gov/takebackday.
