There will be a primary election for the US House Second Congressional District.
Two-term Congressman Jake LaTurner has already announced his plans to leave the House without seeking a third term, thus opening up the Republican nomination — and two people with deep government connections have stepped forward. Former Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has announced a run, as has Jeff Kahrs — a former LaTurner staffer and a US Health and Human Services regional director under former president Donald Trump.
Schmidt served as the state’s attorney general for 12 years, while Kahrs has also worked as an administrator for the Kansas Department for Children and Families and as an advisor to former Kansas Congressman Todd Tiahrt.
Both are running as conservatives. Eglin “Eli” Woody of Kansas City is the only Democrat in the race.
