An Emporia teen was taken to Newman Regional Health after his vehicle struck a deer Monday evening.
According to Lyon County Deputy Robert Miller, the accident was reported just before 8:40 pm in the 1000 block of South Kansas Highway 99. Upon arrival, emergency crews found a 2014 Kia Rio in the east ditch of the area.
It was determined the vehicle, driven by 15-year-old Marco Garza of Emporia, was traveling southbound on the highway and tried to avoid a deer in the road. The vehicle struck the deer and slid sideways coming to a rest in the ditch.
Miller says emergency crews were initially advised the vehicle had rolled during the accident. Crews found the vehicle right side up upon arrival and an investigation determined the vehicle had not rolled.
Garza was taken to Newman with suspected minor injuries and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.
