The Emporia High baseball team got a quality start on the mound by Madden Seidl, but it wasn’t enough in its Spartan Classic opener against Andover Central on Friday night at Soden’s Grove.
Andover Central shut out the Spartans, 5-0.
Andover Central jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, then tacked on three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Emporia High was held to two hits, a single by Maddox Shivley and a double by Andrew Ruxton. Seidl went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and 11 strikeouts.
Emporia High coach Anthony Markowitz said the Spartans struggled at the plate against a quality team.
Emporia High is now 8-13 on the season. The Spartans conclude the regular season at 2 p.m. Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas.
