There are a lot of items on the USD 253 Board of Education slate for Wednesday’s regular meeting.
Near the start of the meeting, the board will have a public hearing to amend the current-year budget. This follows a board conversation nearly a month ago and could well work in the district’s favor because it revolves around additional state money after a change in financial weightings. A vote on amending the budget will come later in the meeting.
Also, the board could well start the sale process for the former Kansas Avenue school building with the Legislature taking no action to essentially hold the building. State law passed last year means the Legislature has to pass on claiming school property before districts can begin a sale process.
Board members have several infrastructure items to address, including sewer repairs at Emporia High and Logan Avenue Elementary, new paint for the Emporia High main gymnasium, new parking lots at Emporia High and new or repaired windows at Emporia Middle School. Total projected cost is over $1.8 million for these projects.
In other business, board members will have an update on chronic absenteeism. They could also approve meal prices for the 2024-2025 academic year, conduct a first read for student handbooks for the upcoming school year and approve bids for furniture, fixture and equipment at William Allen White Elementary.
The meeting is at 4:45 pm at Mary Herbert Education Center.
