Kansas Gas Service is seeking a rate increase, and there will be public hearings next month — although if you want to see them in person, you’ll have to go elsewhere.
The Kansas Corporation Commission has a hearing at 6 pm June 13 on the Washburn Institute of Technology campus, followed by a hearing at 6 pm June 17 at Wichita State University. The KCC says there will be Zoom options for people who want to comment remotely or can’t attend in person, although people need to go to kcc.ks.gov to register by noon the day before the hearing. People who want to just watch a hearing and don’t want to travel can watch the proceedings on the KCC YouTube channel.
Kansas Gas has filed an application for a better than $58 million increase in base rates. If approved, this would increase the monthly residential bill by over 10 percent or by $6.71 for customers who use 73,000 cubic feet or less per year. Customers using more than 73,000 cubic feet of natural gas per year would see their monthly bills climb 8.25 percent or by almost $9.50.
The KCC plans to issue its decision by Oct. 25.
