Revised plans for Emporia’s new skate park in Whittier Park will be presented to the Emporia City Commission this week.
Renderings from American Ramp Company have been posted to the city of Emporia’s social media page and also at KVOE.com’s social media. This follows work by American Ramp and the city Skate Park Advisory Committee, which met last month to evaluate some potential changes to the original plan. There are numerous features included:
*Bowl with a hip
*Bump to rail and down rail for technical maneuvers
*”Manny” pad doubling as both a bump to ledge and an out ledge
*Two handrails for grinding
*Double set for jump practice
*Step-up challenge
*A-frame “hubba” ledge for advanced tricks
*Fun box with rail and pyramid hip for creative sessions
*Flat bar and ledge for balance
*Bank-to-curb section for fluid transitions
*Assorted quarterpipes and bank ramps
Original plans were to have the new project located at Santa Fe, but the city moved the project to Whittier in 2022 after lease negotiations with Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Park landowner, indicated the city would have to submit annual lease requests instead of the original plan of a 99-year lease.
Construction could begin this summer if the City Commission approves and if there aren’t any unforeseen challenges or weather issues.
The project costs $500,000, with half coming from the Lake Kahola Fund and half coming from an anonymous donation.
Other items on the City Commission agenda will be divulged Tuesday.
