Saturday’s Flatland Cruisers Car Show in downtown Emporia was much more than just the 30th anniversary of the event, it was also a record-setting year.
More than 200 vehicles lined four blocks of the downtown area stretching from the 800 to 1200 blocks of Commercial Street. Among the field of entrants was Shawn Sweat of La Crosse with his 2011 Shelby GT 500.
He says Mustangs have been his car of choice since he was a young man.
Sweat made the three-hour drive to Emporia Saturday morning saying he loves the comradery that comes with a car show.
Gene Bane was one of many individuals who traveled from El Dorado for the show bringing his 1969 Road Runner. Bane says he and others made the trip because of friendly competition with some of the other presenters.
Bane tells KVOE News his passion for showcasing cars began on a race track.
The lineup of vehicles Saturday included a good mixture of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Activities also included music, prize drawings, HotWheels races and several food trucks.
All proceeds from Saturday’s car show will go to scholarships for the Flint Hills Technical College’s Automotive Technology department and local charitable causes. Totals from the event are pending.
