Emporia’s local turkey population has grown.
As you may have seen or heard in recent weeks, a turkey has been present around the KVOE studios and Newman Regional Health and just recently a batch of baby turkeys were discovered in the same area. While many may go out looking to interact with the new hatchlings, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is asking residents to give them a wide berth.
According to KDWP Wildlife Biologist Alex Lyon, residents should look to keep roughly five to 10 feet of distance from the babies and adult turkeys. He adds that under no circumstances should you try to feed them.
Lyon says the adult turkey’s presence within the city limits is a “unique situation” noting that wild turkey numbers have been in decline as of late. With that in mind, he says it is likely the turkeys may begin to make their way out of the city and into the country where the habitat is more suitable for them.
Given that possibility, Lyon reiterated that if you happen to come across wild turkeys, whether on roadways or even on your property, keep your distance and allow them to go on about their way.
