Assistant coach Justin Hill has been promoted to head coach of Emporia State cross country, replacing Mark Stanbrough who has announced his retirement. Hill, who has been the director of track operations for the track & field team, will coach the middle and distance runners for the track & field program. Hill has been with Emporia State in his previous role since 2021 and previously spent nine years at Andover High School as head cross country coach and also served on the track and field coaching staff. Under his guidance, the Trojans finished in the top three of the cross country State Championships four times including a runner-up finish in 2018. He also coached the Trojans track & field team to a top three finish at state.
Stanbrough departs the program after his sixth year of his second stint with the program while also coaching the middle and distance runners for the track & field team. He previously served as the head track & field coach and cross country coach for the Hornets from 1984-1992 and helped lead ESU to three top five finishes nationally on the track and two top five national finishes in cross country. He will remain a professor in the university’s Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation.
