Winter wheat harvest is underway, and the Kansas Highway Patrol is asking drivers to be cautious and patient over the next few weeks.
Capt. Candice Breshears says farm equipment is designed to travel at 25 mph or less, well below highway speed, and it’s often wider than the lane of traffic — in some cases, significantly wider. With that in mind, the Highway Patrol is asking drivers to keep in mind several basic tips:
*Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re nearby
*Pass with exterme caution
*A farm vehicle pulling to the right side of a road doesn’t automatically mean it’s turning right or letting you pass
*Use the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a reminder to slow down
*Be patient
*Pay attention
Breshears says drivers should be cautious on all roads, but especially busy rural roads with unmarked intersections, many of which may be paved with gravel.
