A significant change is coming to Emporia’s St. Catherine’s Church.
The Guadalupe Sisters of Christ the King will be leaving Emporia at 4 pm. Church pastor Father Nicholas Ashmore says this is due in part to the religious order’s decision to bring the nuns back to Mexico and in part due to unspecified immigration matters.
Father Ashmore says there will be no other changes in church operations at this time, although there is no comment now on whether another religious order will come in to replace the departing nuns.
The sisters have had a presence in Emporia for at least 30 years. The Leaven, the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, official newspaper, says the church serves about 400 families in and around Emporia.
