Roads are clearing off and flooding is subsiding for areas of north Lyon County after extremely heavy rainfall early Monday.
Parts of north Lyon, west Osage and extreme southeast Wabaunsee counties were in a flood warning until early afternoon, following anywhere from 2-9 inches of rainfall reported by KVOE listeners. That has since expired, but the Marais des Cygnes River above Reading is now in a flood warning until late Tuesday morning. The river went above the 19-foot flood stage around noon and is projected to climb to 24.3, slightly below the original projection of 25.1 feet.
Also, the Salt Creek near Lyndon is in a flood warning until early Tuesday morning. The river is approaching 8 feet, below flood stage of 10 feet but climbing to a projected crest of 13 feet.
Flooding was reported in Allen shortly before 7 am but since has subsided. Flooding also crossed parts of several highways, including US Highway 56, Kansas Highway 99 and Allen Road, but all three stayed completely open before the waters started coming down to more normal levels. Several crashes have been reported in far northeast Lyon County, with hydroplaning reported on the Kansas Turnpike near mile marker 153 — six miles northeast of the Admire gate. One injury crash was reported near mile marker 154, but Emporia Fire says the patient declined an ambulance trip.

8 am Monday: Non-severe storms bring flooding rain to US-56 corridor in Lyon County
Storms early Monday morning have not been severe, but they have brought flooding rain to parts of the US Highway 56 corridor in north Lyon County.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for north Lyon, west Osage and extreme southeast Wabaunsee counties until 10:30 am, following anywhere from 2-9 inches of rainfall reported by KVOE listeners.
The Marais des Cygnes River above Reading is now in a flood warning until late Tuesday morning. The river is in the process of rising from 3.5 feet to 25.1 feet, above flood stage of 19 feet. This would mean the river’s overflow goes into several swift-current channels over Road Y-5 three miles north of Reading if the current forecast holds.

The warning replaces an urban and small stream flood advisory for north Lyon County.
Flooding was reported in Allen shortly before 7 am. The extent of flooding has not been announced.
Water started going over Lyon County roads before 6 am. The list includes:
*US Highway 56 in spots and Kansas Highway 99 in spots. The highway intersection is considered passable as of 6:30 am. The Kansas Department of Transportation has been called to observe the highways and determine whether they are safe for travel.
