Sammy Jo Peterson’s knowledge of Chase County has paid off.
Peterson was recently named the new operations director of Pioneer Bluffs. Peterson says her background and knowledge of the Flint Hills stood out amongst candidates for the position.
A Chase County native, Peterson has spent most of her life in the ranching industry in various roles including backgrounding cattle through the winter and summer months, doctoring sick horses, fixing fences, and “maintaining the health of the prairie.”
Before being named operations director at Pioneer Bluffs, Peterson played five years of basketball at Tabor College in Hillsboro and graduated in 2023 with a Master’s in Business Administration. Peterson also serves as an assistant coach for the Chase County girls basketball team.
Even with being on the job for a short time, there’s still some learning for Peterson. Peterson says the remainder of 2024 is busy for Pioneer Bluffs, but some ideas are brewing for the future.
Peterson also has somewhat of a familial attachment to Pioneer Bluffs. Peterson is the great-great-great granddaughter of David W. Mercer who founded and named the town of Matfield Green, located one mile south of Pioneer Bluffs.
