Violent crime in Kansas declined by almost 4 percent in the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s 2023 Kansas Crime Index Report.
Statewide, the KBI noted declines in each category of violent crime — murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault and aggravated battery. However, the 2023 total was still almost 9 percent above the KBI’s reported 10-year average.
Overall property crimes were up by over 2.5 percent — the first time since 2017 Kansas has seen an increase in property crime numbers.
Emporia Police reported no murders last year, but it noted 16 rapes, 11 pobberies and 65 aggravated assault or aggravated battery cases. It also had over 600 property crimes, including burglaries, thefts and motor vehicle thefts.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office did not report data for last year.
