States across the country are taking a hard look at their education policies when it comes to cell phones in classrooms, and Kansas is no different.
The Kansas State Board of Education is asking Education Commissioner Randy Watson to develop a blue-ribbon task force concentrating on the “non-academic” use of cell phones in classrooms.
Watson says the board will involve 30 members total, including two from the state school board as well as teachers, students, school administrators and others connected to education. The scope of their work may well be finalized next month. Task force recommendations should lead to a template for state board policy.
The US Surgeon General has recently asked for a “multifaceted effort” on cell phone use in schools, in part to “maximize benefits” and in part to curtail any social media risks to students.
