An Emporia man has been formally charged with attempted murder after an alleged incident earlier this week.
Justin Colby Barrett, age 34, was charged Wednesday with attempted first-degree murder and six other counts, including three counts of aggravated battery, and single counts of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated child endangerment and criminal threat.
The affidavit, or law enforcement narrative, is typically not posted to the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal, but the legal complaint indicates Barrett allegedly beat and strangled the victim and also used a mallet against the victim as part of an incident Monday. Details have not been announced, but Barrett also allegedly placed a 1-year-old child in a situation where the child’s life, body or health was endangered.
Barrett’s first appearance is at 1:15 pm Thursday in Lyon County District Court.
Barrett spent nearly five years in prison after he was convicted in 2017 on single counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and criminal threat.
