Advance voter turnout continues to be slow going at the Lyon County Clerk’s Office.
Following a turnout of just over 250 for last week’s offsite event at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building, the first week of in-office voting hasn’t seen much heavier foot traffic with just over 150 individuals casting their ballots as of Friday. Lyon County Election Officer Tammy Vopat spoke with KVOE News Friday and says the slow turnout could be the result of a few factors including this being a primary election with the majority of races including only Republican candidates.
Vopat adds many voters may simply be waiting for the general election noting many individuals do not see the primary as an important event. She says while primary elections do not put anyone directly into office that doesn’t mean it is any less important than the general election.
Local voters have another week of in-office advance voting ahead of election day on August 6. Residents can cast their ballots between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday.
