The next week is going to be hot, excessively so.
Because of this, the National Weather Service has updated an almost weeklong excessive heat watch to an excessive heat warning affecting the entire KVOE listening area. The warning goes from 1 pm Monday until 7 pm Thursday for Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties and noon to 8 pm Thursday for Chase and Greenwood counties.
The warning reflects dangerously hot temperatures in the 100s with heat index readings between 110 to 115 at times. Residents are reminded to take several precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses including drinking lots of water and wearing light and loose-fitting clothes. Residents are also advised to try and adjust their work schedules to handle any strenuous activities in the morning and evening as well as taking frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade.
In response to the oncoming heatwave, several cooling centers have been activated at the following locations.
