Local and area residents did some walking for a worthy cause Saturday — and they took pictures with pets for another.
Leap of Faith Martial Arts student Hannah Henderson organized the Corky’s Cupboard Walkathon to generate funds and food for Emporia State University’s on-campus food pantry. She tells KVOE News her transfer from Emporia State to Iowa State opened her eyes to how much food is needed to be comfortable and how little food money can buy. She says martial arts has taught her to be more confident and more community-engaged.
At the same time, Leap of Faith student Madox Law was taking photos of pets as a fundraiser for the Emporia Animal Shelter.
The shelter is in a transition period as Prairie Paws Animal Shelter moves towards taking over operations by Aug. 4 after the Humane Society of the Flint Hills operated the Emporia facility for the last 10 years.
Corky’s Cupboard changed locations, expanded and added the Basic Needs Coordinator position inside the ESU Memorial Union earlier this year. Since it opened 10 years ago, Corky’s Cupboard has helped over 3,000 students.
