What could a distinguished soldier and general, a former President of the United States and a renowned journalist all possibly have in common?
Well, according to Christopher Lovett, the latest presenter in the Sundays at the Site series Sunday afternoon, the journalist — William Allen White — was the “catalyst” that brought these three together. We’re speaking of course of White, former President Theodore Roosevelt and General Frederick Funston who were the central focus of Lovett’s presentation titled “A Solider, A Politician and A Reporter: Sunday on the Porch.”
Lovett focused on Roosevelt and Funston’s exploits during the Spanish-American War as well as their connection to and impact on White. While speaking with KVOE News Sunday, Lovett noted that while White was the central link between the three gentlemen, both Funston and Roosevelt had a significant impact on White and the legacy he would go on to build.
Red Rocks State Historic Site spokesman and local historian Roger Heineken also spoke with KVOE Sunday and believes Sunday’s presentation was a great inclusion in this year’s series noting they strive to bring as much variety as possible.
Sundays at the Site will continue Sunday, August 11 with a presentation by Brad Cochennet focusing on Emporia Architects Charles Squires and Henry Brinkman and their contributions to the community.
