Lyon County deputies have arrested a male juvenile after the person allegedly stole two pickups and crashed one into a house near Neosho Rapids.
Lyon County Sgt. Zach Shafer says the investigation began shortly after 4 am Sunday after an abandoned pickup was reported as parked in the street in the 400 block of Exchange in Neosho Rapids. Less than 20 minutes later, a resident reported a loud bang and a suspicious male leaving the area of the 1600 block of Kansas Highway 130, or almost exactly between Neosho Rapids and Interstate 35. Deputies determined a second pickup went off the highway into a house.
Around 4:30 am, a person matching the suspicious male description from the house crash incident was reported walking on Interstate 35. The juvenile was found and taken to Lyon County Juvenile Intake on suspicion of felony theft, leaving the scene of an accident, interference with law enforcement and not having a driver’s license.
Shafer says the juvenile is suspected of stealing the first pickup from an unspecified address either in or near Emporia and driving to Neosho Rapids, where he stole the second pickup. He then drove northbound on K-130 before crashing and leaving the scene. It’s unclear why the male left the highway and crashed into the house.
No injuries have been reported. Formal charges against the juvenile are pending.
