The annual Battle of the Badges blood drive is just about here.
As has been the case for years, the drive will be held at Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church beginning Wednesday. On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, American Red Cross Central Plains spokesperson Susan Faler urged people to set appointments and give blood.
The need for blood is critical — again — and Lyon County Emergency Communications Director Roxanne Van Gundy says the drive is a big deal for all involved — donors, patients and emergency personnel.
Lyon County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jill Cook says this is a great way to both be involved in the community and help the community in times of urgent need.
Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms says it’s a relaxed setting with a potentially wide reach.
Hours are 12-6 pm Wednesday and Thursday, as well as 8 am to 2 pm Friday. Donors need to bring a photo ID and drink lots of water before arriving.
There will be the opportunity for people to vote for their favorite participating agency. With that in mind, the Emporia Police Department will once again have Kisses from Cops, while the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will have Ducks from Deputies as thank-yous for donors. Hot dogs will also be served.
To set appointments, call 800-RED-CROSS, go online to redcrossblood.org or use the Red Cross mobile app.
