An Emporia-based musician and sustainable living advocate has received a special fellowship designed to “ignite social change.”
Elexa Dawson was one of 16 artists awarded a $25,000 fellowship through the Mid-America Arts Alliance. The program is supported by the Mellon Foundation and offers mentorship and professional development towards “socially engaged creative practices.”
Dawson is a co-founder of the folk music group Weda Skirts and the founder of Good Way Gardens, a recently-formed land-based arts organization. Besides offering the monthly Good Way Sundays events at the Historic Richard Howe farmstead, Good Way Gardens is also involved in art projects using natural environments and materials as well as the use of native plants in back yards and other locations.
