A lightning strike was the cause of a major outage that affected nearly 800 Evergy customers in western Emporia Tuesday morning.
That’s according to Evergy District Services Manager Rolland Trahoon II’s interview with KVOE Tuesday morning.
Crews managed to have all customers affected by the outage restored by 9 am, however, it wasn’t without its difficulties thanks to the flash flooding and heavy rain across the area.
In addition to the western Emporia situation, crews have been busy dealing with several smaller-scale outages both in and around Emporia affecting as few as five and as many as 85 customers at a time. Trahoon says those repairs may take a bit longer due to debris and residual flooding from the morning’s storms.
Additional crews from Eureka have been called in to assist with the restoration efforts. For updates on outages visit the Evergy outage map or call Evergy.
6:30 am Tuesday: Major power outage reported in western Emporia Tuesday morning
Nearly 800 Evergy customers are offline after a significant power outage developed in west Emporia early Tuesday morning.
The outage was reported just before 6 am and affected customers from Dryer Park to Jones Park north to east and Dryer Park to Weaver Street north to south. Evergy crews have been dispatched to the area with an estimated restoration time of 7:30 am, subject to change.
Additional smaller outages have also been reported across the community including a minor outage from Morningside Drive to Reeble Park affecting just over 50 customers. The cause of the outages has not been reported, however, they did develop amid non-severe storm activity which has brought heavy rainfall and an abundance of lightning to the area through the morning hours.
