With the Emporia Recreation Commission’s Rec Center Steering Committee leaning towards a new public rec facility, public input is considered as vitally important the next several months — and that process kickstarted Tuesday with a number of pop-up locations in town.
The process was represented at the Lyon County Fair and Emporia’s elementary school open houses Tuesday evening. BG Consultants representatives David Goss and Trenton Wesley were at Walnut Elementary. They were glad to be at this stage of the process.
The dollar amount hasn’t been set yet because the plans will reflect the public’s wishes, but it will be a sizable investment — and a needed one, according to Rec Commission Assistant Director Amanda Gutierrez.
Gutierrez says a new facility could also be an economic driver through tournaments for sports like basketball, volleyball and soccer.
Meetings will continue on a monthly basis possible into December. The goal is to have plans in front of the public before Christmas before a vote on a sales tax funding mechanism as part of a special election March 5.
