The fall semester is now underway at both Flint Hills Technical College and Emporia State University following the first day of classes at ESU Monday.
As is tradition following the first day of classes, downtown Emporia was the place to be as the annual Welcome Back Block Party for both ESU and FHTC took place through the early evening hours. Cool temperatures and clear skies were a welcome sight for organizers after last year’s event had to be moved inside of White Auditorium due to heat indexes well over 100 degrees.
The block party once again allowed students to visit local businesses, meet with organizations, socialize and win various prizes. Aside from students several local representatives were also on hand for the festivities including Emporia City Manager Trey Cocking who took a moment to speak with KVOE News.
Cocking says it is very important for city leadership to be visible at events such as the block party noting they want to help make all residents feel welcome and appreciated whether they are here for a lifetime or just a school year. Cocking adds they are grateful for all students who choose to make Emporia their home noting their is an extra layer of vibrance in the community when school is in session.
Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods says the block party is also a time to create or re-establish familiarity with their surroundings.
ESU Freshman Jasper Enneking of Sabetha says he made the right choice in coming to Emporia.
First-year transfer student Ashton Ramsey of Great Bend says he loves the atmosphere of the community.
As previously mentioned, the block party followed the start of classes for ESU students Monday. FHTC began classes last week.
