Numerous scam efforts are being reported by different entities over the past week.
Evergy has reported two scam efforts. One has scammers claiming the utility will return $200 to seniors through the Evergy Cares Kansas Fund — but before getting customer account information, address and other personal information. The Evergy Cares Kansas Fund is legitimate, but this effort is not. The fund gives financial assistance directly to a customer account, but only if the customer reaches out first.
There is also a discount scam against Evergy. Scammers say Evergy may offer a discount if the customer immediately says their credit card number.
Law enforcement is reporting separate scam activity. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says there is a person “spoofing” the department’s administrative phone number, meaning calls to residents look like they are coming from the Sheriff’s Office when they are not. A person claiming to be Deputy Sean Simmons says residents have warrants out for their arrest and he needs to be paid so the warrants can be cleared. The Sheriff’s Office says it will never call about a warrant and will never have you pay over the phone to clear a warrant.
