The Emporia High cross country teams opened their season with the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday at Warner Park.
The Emporia High girls finished sixth as a team with 127 points behind Washburn Rural, Seaman, Olathe North, Manhattan and Olathe Northwest. Sophomore Madison Evans led the Lady Spartans with a 10th place finish with a time of 20:15.3. Sophomore Emma Beatty finished 12th with a time of 20:22.4. Evans qualified for state as a freshman with Beatty also returning. Also returning are juniors Allison Curtis and Bailee Van Sickle. Curtis finished 35th with a time of 22:46.4 while Van Sickle finished 42nd with a time of 23:35.7. Ivanna Ordunno finished ahead of Van Sickle in 41st with a time of 23:23.8.
On the boys side, freshman Xaden Delgado finished 18th with a time of 17:17.4. Junior Gideon Lowery finished 21st with a time of 17:22. Kasen Van Sickle finished 30th with a time of 17:45.4 Sophomore Edgar Gomez finished 44th with a time of 18:23.7. Lowery and Gomez return for the Spartans, but the big departure for the team during the offseason was Daghyn True moving to Spring Hill for his senior season.
Emporia High will host the EHS Invitational at Jones Park next Saturday.
