Emporia State’s King Lake remains in a blue-green algae alert.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s weekly update shows no change in alert status for the lake near the Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center. King Lake has been a watch or warning status for two months.
Melvern Outlet’s Swim Pond is back in an algae warning after being in a watch for almost a month. The pond has been in a watch or warning, however, since mid-July.
Melvern Outlet River Pond remains in a warning, as it has since late July.
Algae alerts are for confirmed or likely blooms, which create several toxins that can be harmful or deadly if the algae is consumed. Toxins can be eaten, inhaled or absorbed by skin contact, with symptoms including rash, headache, sore throat, diarrhea and fever.
